Restaurant Hofmeisterei Hirtzberger – I think I’m in (food) heaven

Spectacular food, amazing wine and the country inn concept implemented to perfection

After a long day at a wine seminar in Krems we were all looking forward to a nice meal and nice wine, and finally decided to swing by Hofmeisterei Hirtzberger. Hofmeisterei Hirtzberger opened in 2014 and serves fine, regional cuisine with a wide range of wines. The restaurant is located in Weißenkirchen in Wachau, direcly by the river Danube in a building that was originally built around 1730 and features beautiful arches. It’s a charming place with terracotta tiled floors, rugs and warm light – all in all very cosy.

Food

We started with a basket of different breads with homemade spreads of pumpkin and meat paste. Both spreads were delicious, but what was really nice is that there is a hot stone in the bread basket, so the bread is warm – genius.

As starter we tried a chicken heart lasagna with pear and celery salad and a beef soup with semolina dumpling, liver dumpling and pancake strips. What can I say, the lasagna was creamy in texture and had an amazing, subtle flavor and tasted absolutely delicious. The celery and pear salad added perfect contrast with its fruity crispness – a perfect fall dish. For the soup: they always say that you can distinguish a good chef from a bad one by letting them cook something simple – I think we found a great chef, as the soup was excellent.

We ordered roast calf’s liver with potato puree, pike filet with beetroot, roast goose with potato dumpling and young venison saddle with parsnip, chestnut gnocchi plum puree and quince as mains. All dishes were great – the venison was world class and left me speechless for about half an hour (which doesn’t happen very often 😉 ). It was just a dish in perfection with tender meat, fruity plum and quince, creamy parsnip, crispy dough and soft gnocchi – WOW!

Because everything else had been so great, we just couldn’t resist ordering dessert – chestnut filled dough pockets with vanilla sauce and almond biscuit ice cream. I’m usually not into desserts or ice cream, but this almond biscuit ice cream was to die for.

Wine

With respect to wine, Hirtzberger Hofmeisterei offers a wide range of wines from Wachau, dominated by selections by Franz Hirtzberger and other renowned wine makers such as FX Pichler, Knoll, Bründlmayer, Mantlerhof etc. Additionally, you’ll find nice red wines from Burgenland on their wine menu that includes around 100 wines from Austria and a much wider selection of interneational wines. Trust me, you will find something you like.

We tried our way through wine-by-the-glass section and mostly stuck to Mathias Hirtzberger’s wines. Have you ever tried his 2015 Kollmütz Grüner Veltliner Smaragd or the Kollmitz Riesling Smaragd? If not, it’s time to do so!

Service & things good to to know

Service was great: subtle, attentive and made sure we were never on the dry. In case you need a wine recommendation you’ll be in good hands as well.

Hofmeisterei Hirtzberger is also the head office of Mathias Hirtzberger’s wineyard, which is why you can get his wines at farm gate price.

Conclusion

If you are in the area and are looking for a treat, I recommend you go to Hofmeisterei Hirtzberger. Food and wine are excellent and the service is very attentive. Moreover, the atmosphere invites you to sit down, relax and enjoy. All in all, you’re in for great value for money and an very enjoyable experience.
